Can machine screws be used in wood?

Not effectively. Machine screws are not designed to cut threads in wood and will either not engage properly or split the wood. Use wood screws for wood.

What screws for pressure treated wood?

Always use stainless steel screws (304 minimum, 316 for coastal/outdoor) with pressure treated wood. Standard zinc-plated screws will corrode rapidly.
